I designed and assembled the gowns and other costumes in this beautiful production, including four magic transforming costumes of my own design. I directed a crew of 7 stitchers who assisted me with construction and alterations. Then I ran wardrobe for the run of the production, including backstage quick changes, onstage, hidden magic changes and costume maintenance between shows.

Redesigned Gowns

I found a local church organization which sells overstock designer gowns at a very low price, allowing me to purchase two copies of each mermaid style gown to reconstruct into oval style hoop skirts. Here are a few of the redesigned gowns and the dresses they were created from.

The Lettuce Dress: used the bottom flair of two mermaid dresses, spiraled together over an oval hoop base, to create this layered ballgown which reminds me of a head of lettuce.

The Peacock Dress: I Used the ruffled bottom flair to create two farthingale swags over a matching teal oval hoopskirt

The Twins: Don't you just hate it when "SHE" shows up at the ball wearing the same gown?!? The original mermaid gowns, with painted faux fur pebbles, gold lamé, iridescent drapes & bow at the drop waist...so much wrong with the original dress desig

The Twins: Don't you just hate it when "SHE" shows up at the ball wearing the same gown?!? The original mermaid gowns, with painted faux fur pebbles, gold lamé, iridescent drapes & bow at the drop waist...so much wrong with the original dress designs! I turned the bow into a bodice, the drapes into a waist peplum, split the lamé skirt and put it over a purple hoopskirt. While comic, I think the redesign was a huge improvement over the original.

The Earth Mother: This was the simplist redesign. All I needed to do was split the front of the blue underskirt and put it over a yellow underskirt, on the oval hoopskirt.

Inside Out Gowns: For the 6 bridesmaids, I made white brocade oval hoop skirts. Purchased chiffon skirts were turned inside out; the knit lining became a waist swag. Coupled with a white fashion corset as the bodice.

Fox and Racoon Footmen: To solve the problem of keeping wigs and tri-corn hats on these active, gymnastic characters, I commisioned custom-made animal masks and created secure headpieces on a tape helmet which was molded to the actresses' heads.
