Metamorphoses

By Mary Zimmerman

based on the Greek mythology of The Ovid.

I’m especially proud of costuming this elegant play performed on, in & around a water stage.

Planning costumes for the watery environment, to be:

  • Comfortable for the actors

  • Easy to dry & care for

  • and of course, designed to add to the beautiful tableaus of this dreamy theatrical piece.

Running wardrobe for this show was a fun challenge, to keep the many costumes fresh & dry.

I was kept busy running laundry, even throughout the show, as some costumes soaked at the beginning were needed rinsed and dried for the end.

As a base costume, I tried to use a lot of polyester chiffons and other fabrics which would not absorb water, and which had nice flowy, drape.

For each ladies dress bodice, and some of the men’s tops, I experimented with a variety of hand smocked details. Smocking is a technique of systematically stitching patterns by drawing points in the fabric together, to create a 3D pattern.
